Medtronic is one of the world's largest medical technology companies.

Through innovation and collaboration, Medtronic helps alleviate pain, restore health, and extend lives. In the past year, more than 79 million people worldwide have benefited from our medical therapies to treat more than 70 common conditions.

Medtronic founded the Bakken Research Center (BRC) in Maastricht in 1987. It started with 45 employees and today employs more than 400 international talents of 35 different nationalities.

BRC is unique because of its many specializations and expertise in one location – this fosters interactions in areas where they intersect, such as working for multiple divisions of Medtronic and sharing knowledge and best practices.

But BRC is also unique in that it plays a leading role in advancing the commercialization of Medtronic therapies – from idea to market adoption.

BRC is one of Medtronic's largest R&D centers outside the U.S. In recent years, the BRC has pioneered major medical innovations, such as cardiac resynchronization therapy, and deep brain stimulation, which will be discussed in more detail in the presentation.
